The university released the following statement: “Our campus and our community were hit hard by heavy storms tonight. It just became safe for the university’s police to leave the shelter and they’re assessing the damage and going to the dormitory to check on the residents. ”

Jacksonville State University Athletic Director Greg Seitz tweeted confirming that the Jacksonville Coliseum actually suffered major damage from the tornado.

Schools from central Tennessee to Birmingham, Alabama, closed early so students and staff had enough time to arrive safely before the storm came.
