San Bruno is about nine miles south of San Francisco, with a population of about 43,000. YouTube is the largest employer in the city and many employees travel here from San Francisco. Although YouTube is owned by Google, it operates in a separate office about 20 miles from Google’s main campus in Mountain View, California.
The YouTube building sits near the crest of a hill leaning from a nearby road. The hierarchical structure, modest by the standards of many large technology companies, is surrounded by several other office buildings, and a Carl’s Jr. Fast food restaurant is across the street.
Outside YouTube’s headquarters, armed police stormed a crowd of about 200 employees who had evacuated to a nearby parking lot late Tuesday afternoon. Police asked officials who had witnessed something firsthand to come forward, and about two dozen, some of them visibly upset, went to the officers.

Zach Vorhies, 37, a senior programming engineer at YouTube, said in a meeting that he was sitting at his work area when the fire alert went off. He got his electric skateboard and set out toward a back leave, he said. As he slipped a rock slope, he overheard someone shouting and saw a man lying motionless in one of the office’s outdoor dining areas.
“He had a red spot on his stomach and was lying on his back without moving,” Vorhies said. “I saw the blood soaked in the shirt.”
About five feet away from the victim, he said, a man shouted, “Come to me!” Vorhies thought the man was the offender, but he did not see a gun and said it was possible that the man had actually “been provoking the shooter.”
After a minute an equipped policeman entered the yard region and Mr. Vorhies left rapidly, he said.
The eating region can be come to from an adjoining stopping structure without a worker’s identification, said Voorhees.
